The Battle Royale's Niche Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream During This Update

Respawn Entertainment has an exciting surprise in store for the popular battle royale players, perfectly timed for festive season. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's super-slick movement will be pleased to learn that an innovative traversal feature is being implemented when the Amped season goes live on November 4th.

Unveiling The Mantle Boost

Dubbed "Mantle Boosting" by Respawn, this ability provides gamers a surge of propulsion when scaling obstacles. According to key developer the design lead, Mantle Boosting was previously existed of the game for quite a while, often called as "ledge boosting." However it's challenging for casual gamers, and is mainly used by competitive players in Ranked Mode or tournaments. This season, Respawn simplifies the process for everyone to successfully perform these advanced movement boosts.

"Mantle Boosts have been in the game for some time, but the movement requires skill to perform and gamers would never know it [is in the game] without external guides," the designer states. "Now including a visual cue so users can clearly identify the timing to activate the high-octane movement ability, making accessible the mechanic and adding fresh strategies to compete for more players."

Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a previously obscure technique accessible to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says the team wants gamers to feel powerful — even those who are inexperienced.

"Our community performs advanced techniques like super-glides and tap-strafes, and we examined at other games, observed what our players execute, and we wondered, 'What if we extend these capabilities to more players?'" Mohan clarifies. "Because currently, some of these techniques are kind of janky to access — you need to change controls and hit precise timings. So we said, 'How about we make a polished implementation?'"

Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is largely the central theme in Season 27, with characters Horizon, Rampart, and Valkyrie all getting buffs to help keep them in motion. Recovery time on Horizon's Gravity Lift is shorter, and this skill will boost users upward much quicker than it used to. Her defensive walls now include overhead protection and the ability to grant movement bonuses to allies in range. But it's the high-flying this Legend receiving the most attention now, with various adjustments applied to enhance her as stronger, quicker, and more lethal.

"I think there's quite a consensus that Valkyrie's time is here," states Legend designer the designer. "Certainly that she's been top-tier in the past, but with the introduction of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in today's Apex. This presented an ideal chance for the team to reexamine a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and essentially bring her back to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore her competitive status in the game's meta, Holstead says the team assessed all her skills and introduced significant changes. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, increasing velocity while airborne, and this equipment regenerates three times faster, allowing the player to remain longer aloft. Now she won't be harmed from her own Missile Swarm, which has also been upgraded to mark enemies who are hit from it. Her Skyward Dive ability — which launches her entire squad skyward for redeployment or escape — now takes much less time to activate. Additionally, she gains some new perk choices that users can choose to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her rockets, or accelerate her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead comments.

Map Changes

Additionally, the only floating arena, this location, receives a movement-friendly facelift, with major changes that opens up bottlenecks and makes securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. The developers says Apex Legends this update is all about giving players the tools they need to keep up with the competition.

"Essentially, we were looking at Apex's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," says principal designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped launches November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
