Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen people were hurt in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house near the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and another man who ran away after the blast was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area displayed the structure turned into a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the property was under an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the home. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the blast had happened on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed local news, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
