FBI to Depart Notorious Brutalist J. Edgar Hoover Headquarters in Washington DC

The leadership of the FBI has declared a historic move: the bureau will permanently close its sprawling main building and move personnel to already established office spaces.

Relocation Plans for the Top Investigative Organization

According to a new announcement, the older J. Edgar Hoover Building, a fixture in downtown DC, will be closed permanently. The staff will be housed in current buildings across the capital.

This logistical change will see a number of agents and staff moving into space within the Reagan Building, which was once the home of another government department.

“After more than 20 years of failed attempts, we have secured a strategy to permanently close the FBI’s Hoover headquarters and move the workforce into a safe, modern facility,” the announcement said.

Resource Allocation and Homeland Defense Focus

The initiative is framed as a way to redirect taxpayer money. Leadership stated that this plan puts resources where they belong: on national security, fighting crime, and protecting national security.

It is also meant to providing the agency's personnel with better tools while saving significant funds compared to staying in the current headquarters.

Legal Controversies and the Headquarters' Legacy

This announcement comes after recent political controversies concerning the bureau's headquarters location. Earlier, state leaders had initiated legal action over the termination of prior plans to move the headquarters to their state, arguing that funds had already been set aside by lawmakers for that purpose.

The J. Edgar Hoover Building itself is a notable example of concrete-heavy architecture, conceived and built in the 1960s. Its aesthetic has long been a subject of criticism, as it stood in stark contrast to the look of other government structures in the capital.

Its own former director, J. Edgar Hoover, was famously dismissive of the structure, once deriding it as “a terrible eyesore ever constructed in the history of Washington.”
